Five Ways to Beat the Heat

Happy Friday! I hope you had a wonderful week. We are finally beginning to get settled in at my parents’ house. I must admit that it is difficult having my daughter so distracted by the amenities surrounding their beach house. She’s always asking to go in the pool, to the beach or to go upstairs or downstairs. It’s exhausting. Then she gets all riled up when my parents come home from work, which is usually just an hour before her bedtime, so it makes for a little more difficult bedtime transition. However, I’m really grateful for the opportunity to stay here and I appreciate the extra company while my hubby is out of town. We are definitely enjoying our time spent in Anna Maria.

Since it’s Friday, I think you know what that means. Yep, I’m linking up with Mar, Courtney and Cynthia for the #FridayFive. This week we are discussing Five Ways to Beat the Heat. Since tomorrow is the first day of Summer, I think this is a topic well worth the mention.

I’m going to go ahead and admit that, even though I’m a Florida born and bred native, I hate the heat. I’m notoriously the first to complain about the heat and humidity when outdoors. It can even become uncomfortably hot indoors and buildings and rooms can certainly suffer from this if their air conditioning is not functioning as it should – click here to learn about Air Conditioning Services in order to repair a broken unit. Truthfully, I don’t know how I managed to work four years under the sun as a lifeguard. I guess it wasn’t too terrible, because I have so many enjoyable memories from those summers. Maybe it’s all relative to the amount of fun you’re having. What makes weather ‘hot’ is a matter of what you’re used to. So this is my family friendly list of ways to beat the heat.

1. Get Moving Early

The early bird catches the worm, and they also avoid the worst heat of the day. Whether you’re setting off for your long run, or taking the kids to a theme park, getting out early in the morning can mean the difference between 70 degrees or 90 degrees. My friends out in Arizona are known for beginning their morning long runs at the wee hour of 4a.m. in order to avoid the desert sun, which can reach temperatures near 100 degrees by 8 am. If you’re planning to spend the day outside, make sure to schedule a couple breaks throughout the day in air conditioned or shaded areas to give yourself time to cool off.

2. Hydrate Appropriately

Plan your running route around water fountains or stash water along your route. If you’ll be out with the kiddos, freeze a couple bottles of water and stash them in diaper bags or underneath the stroller. Most theme parks and museums will allow you to bring outdoor drinks as long as they fit inside a personal cooler. The bottles will mostly thaw throughout the day and you’ll have a refreshing chilled beverage when you need it. I use this mini lunch cooler from Packit when I’m out with the kids.

3. Apply Sunscreen Daily

Even when you think you don’t need it, you should still be applying sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. If you have children that are going out with you, apply the lotion before dressing them. If you need a tutorial on this, there’s this pretty amusing article from the Huffington Post.

4. Alternate Outdoor & Indoor Activities

Make one day a pool day and the next day can be a indoor playground, or park day. If you are always out under the sun, you’ll (literally) get burnt out faster. Look for shaded areas to train or take the kids. For runners, seek out a gym, studio or training facility with climate control to use a few times a week. Take an indoor spin class on cross training days, or hit the treadmill instead of the pavement. For parents, don’t forget that shopping malls tend to have indoor playgrounds for the kiddos to add variety. The change will keep you from getting bored and the cooler temperature will help you stay comfortable during longer sessions. 5. Dress Appropriately

Cotton clothing soaks up sweat and can weigh garments down and promote chaffing. Tech style or moisture wicking fabrics are something I’ve come to embrace over the years of running in the heat and humidity. Even when I’m at the theme parks with the kids, I tend to wear my running gear to aid in keeping me cool and comfortable. Sporting a hat and sunglasses is also a great idea if you’ll be exposed for prolong periods of time.

  1. I used to only wear cotton shirts – now I can’t imagine running in cotton shirts or shorts! I dont know how I did it haha. These are all great tips. If I run outside I try to find shady paths otherwise the sun beating down on you just makes you so tired.

    1. I wore a cotton shirt for my first half marathon. OMGoodness. It was terrible. I chaffed so bad under my arms. Lesson definitely learned.

  2. I use to keep a mini cooler in my car for post run food and drinks. I need to be better about applying sunscreen before my runs (especially when I head out before the sunrises).
